LG to supply 2-4 million OLED display units to Apple for this years iPhone: Report

Image
Last year it was reported that Apple had invested $2.7 billion (or 3 trillion Korean Won) in LG Display's organic light-emitting diode (OLED) plant to secure supplies for future iPhones. The move suggested that the Cupertino-based giant was looking to land a second supplier of the OLED panels, which would reduce its dependence on Samsung. Now, a Bloomberg report has claimed that Apple's investment will finally bear fruit and it will reportedly land an initial stock of 2-4 million units of the displays. Citing a source, who requested not to be identified, the move will likely help Apple to reduce the cost of the iPhones with OLED panels as it will give the company an upper hand while it negotiates with Samsung, which has been the sole supplier of the OLED panels for the iPhone X. According to the report, the deal between the two tech giants will benefit LG as well as Samsung. While Apple will be able to buy large volumes of displays from LG for next year’s iPhones, LG will get...

New SD Card standard allows up to 128TB storage

Image
If you thought that your SD card wasn’t big enough to hold all your data, you’d be happy to know that the SD Association has announced a new card specification that would increase the maximum possible storage to 128 Terabytes. In order to facilitate the transfer of this much data, the speed specification has also been increased to 985MB/s. Currently, SD cards can support a maximum of 1TB storage and while Sandisk has shown off a 1TB SD Card, a 2TB card has not yet been produced. Not to mention, Sandisk’s 512GB card originally cost $800, although it has come down to $300. The challenge for producing these high capacity cards is the cost factor, which isn’t reducing in the same way the demand for such cards is increasing. With the advent of 4K and VR based content, creators are now in need of cards that can store all the RAW data, which is multiple times larger than the files we finally end up consuming.  The new card standard will be called SD Ultra-Capacity (SDUC) and will use a n...

Facebook allows users to see all ads on Pages, flag suspicious ones

Image
After coming under the scanner for alleged Russian meddling in 2016 US Presidential election through Facebook, the social networking giant has now decided to allow users to see the active ads a Page is running and flag suspicious ones. "The hope of the announcement today is that it will hold us accountable, it will hold advertisers accountable -- but it will also give people a lot more ability to find things that maybe shouldn't be up. Or find things that might be misleading so that we can take actions," Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg said on Thursday. "Our ultimate goal is very simple: we want to reduce bad ads, we want to make sure that people understand what they're seeing, who paid for it, and the fullness of what other people might see," Sandberg said while addressing the media at Facebook's Menlo Park headquarters in California.  As part of the new transparency initiatives, Facebook said users will be able to see the ads a Page is running across Fac...

Google teaches kids to spot fake news, stay safe online

"Children are a large part of the Internet user group and hence they need to be taught how to stay safe on the web to develop them into socially responsible digital citizens of the future," Mohanty added.  The campaign that ran for over four weeks, engaged children between 13 to 18 years of age in four online assignments that were designed to have both real world project...

Microsoft brings its iconic mouse back by launching the Classic IntelliMouse

Image
Microsoft launched the original IntelliMouse way back in 1996. One of the first mice of its time to feature a scroll wheel, it instantly became a favourite amongst gamers for its ergonomic, lightweight design. It was later succeeded by many mice and eventually the IntelliMouse Explorer 3.0 in 2003, another big icon. The design of the IntelliMouse has since remained unchanged—until now, of course—after fifteen straight years. In its blog a couple of days ago, Microsoft announced that it is bringing a new model to replace the longstanding wired rodent. The replacement to the iconic mouse is called the Microsoft Classic IntelliMouse. It borrows a big chunk of its design directly from its predecessor, while bringing in several technological improvements inside its curvy plastic shell. It retains the same Omron switches for the left and right click, but sports three new Kailh switches for the middle wheel button and side buttons. The overall structure and mechanical engineering of...
