Pinterest takes the lead in the fight against online misinformation

Image
The battle against misinformation just signed up a powerful, albeit unlikely ally: Pinterest. Earlier this week, the social network evoked the nuclear option, electing to shut down search queries likely to lead to false or misleading information, according to the Wall Street Journal. The search terms in question were those relating to the anti-vaccination movement, a hot-button topic recently after a measles outbreak in the Pacific Northwest. “It’s better not to serve those results than to lead people down what is like a recommendation rabbit hole,” says Ifeoma Ozomoa, Pinterest’s public policy and social impact manager. Consumers ‘floundering in a sea of unknown’ as confidence stays negative

Image
A “giant cloud of resignation” hangs over consumers as they await the outcome of Brexit, impact consumer confidence which remained negative, although stable, in February, at -13. That means confidence was actually up by one point this month, compared to January, although it is still three points lower than February 2018, acc ording to GfK’s consumer confidence index. Of the five metrics measured, three increased and two stayed the same in February as consumers continue to take a wait-and-see approach to the outcome of Brexit. The measure for the general economic situation of the country during the last 12 months increased two points compared to January but is still stuck well in negative territory at -33. That is four points down compared to February 2018. Expectations for the general economic situation over the next 12 months have also increased one point to -38, although this is still 12 points lower than February 2018. Joe Staton, client strategy director at GfK, says the conti...

Open-source communities fight over telco market

Image
When you think of MWC Barcelona, chances are you’re thinking about the newest smartphones and other mobile gadgets, but that’s only half the story. Actually, it’s probably far less than half the story because the majority of the business that’s done at MWC is enterprise telco business. Not too long ago, that business was all about selling expensive proprietary hardware. Today, it’s about moving all of that into software — and a lot of that software is open source. It’s maybe no surprise then that this year, the Linux Foundation (LF) has its own booth at MWC . It’s not massive, but it’s big enough to have its own meeting space. The booth is shared by the three LF projects: the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), Hyperleger and Linux Foundation Networking, the home of many of the foundational projects like ONAP and the Open Platform for NFV (OPNFV) that power many a modern network. And with the advent of 5G, there’s a lot of new market share to grab here. To discuss the CNCF’s...

Box fourth quarter revenue up 20 percent, but stock down 22 percent after hours

Image
By most common sense measurements, Box had a pretty good earnings report today, reporting revenue up 20 percent year over year to $163.7 million. That doesn’t sound bad, yet Wall Street was not happy with the stock getting whacked, down more than 22 percent after hours as we went to press. It appears investors were unhappy with the company’s guidance. Part of the problem, says Alan Pelz-Sharpe, principal analyst at Deep Analysis, a firm that watches the content management space, is that the company failed to hit its projections, combined with weaker guidance; a tough combination, but he points out the future does look bright for the company. “ Box did miss its estimates and got dinged pretty hard today; however, the bigger picture is still of solid growth. As Box moves more and more into the enterprise space, the deal cycle takes longer to close and I think that has played a large part in this shift. The onus is on Box to close those bigger deals over the next couple of quarters, ...

Quora intros bulk ad creation, editing

Image
Ready to scale up your Quora ads? Good timing. The company just added the ability to create and edit ads in bulk in Quora Ads Manager. How it works. Upload and download. The bulk ads editor has templates to download. You’ll create and edit ads in a CSV file or in Excel. The bulk ads creator is available for text ads only at this time. You can edit text in existing image ads now, though. Why you should care. Quora has checked off a lot of boxes — conversion tracking, retargeting, new ad formats, etc., but nobody wants to spend time on tedious, repetitive tasks. The need to manually add and edit a bunch of ads in a UI adds friction and can keep advertisers from fully investing. Bulk editing capabilities are key for any ad platform to increase advertiser adoption and budget flow. This could help attract more advertisers and entice existing advertisers to further build out their campaigns. If you’re a current Quora advertiser, now’s a good time to download and spot check your curre...

The first self-driving car by 2020: just another lofty promise?

Image
It seems we have another ambitious promise from a leader in the autonomous vehicle industry. Earlier this month, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and a bunch of other futuristic startups, said that he anticipates completion of fully autonomous technology by the end of 2019, with their self-driving vehicles being so advanced in 2020 that the driver can basically take a nap. Specifically, he said, “I think we will be ‘feature-complete’ on full self-driving this year, meaning the car will be able to find you in a parking lot, pick you up, take you all the way to your destination without… This story continues at The Next Web from News Aggregator - Top News Stories From Your Favourite News Source | News Vally https://ift.tt/2To76SH

Facebook Showcase offers upfront ad buys against premium video content

Facebook introduced Showcase on Tuesday , a new “premium” video advertising program. As part of the launch, the company bundled three of its existing ad products: In-Stream Reserve, In-Stream Reserve Categories and Sponsorships. Why you should care Facebook is positioning Showcase as a premium video advertising program aimed at helping advertisers reach younger audiences. While the ad products that make up Showcase are not new, Facebook reported nearly 100 million U.S. viewers are watching In-Stream Reserve content on Watch, within their News Feed and on Pages each month based on Facebook’s internal data. The company also found, during the last three months, 43 percent of its U.S. viewers watching In-Stream Reserve eligible videos were 18 to 34-years old. This was a much bigger audience of younger viewers compared to Nielsen estimate’s that only 28 percent of the U.S. TV-viewing audience between August and October of last year were part of the same 18 to 34-year age group. Presto raises $30M to bring its AI platform and tabletop ordering hardware to restaurant chains

The “restaurant of the future” may elicit thoughts of a chrome diner with robot servers and an otherwise hefty amount of Tokyo futurist kitsch, but the fact is that the forthcoming sit-down dining experience may just end up looking a lot like ordering from a takeout app. Presto is working with restaurants to update the 21st century dine-in experience, letting customers order and pay from their table with a tablet device while also providing hardware like wearables for servers so they can be alerted when they are needed by customers. The company announced today that they’ve raised $30 million in growth funding from Recruit Holdings and Romulus Capital. I2BF Global Ventures, EG Capital and Brainchild Holdings also participated in the raise.  Considering how much online shopping has shaped commerce and apps like Instacart and Uber Eats are changing how we get food delivered to our houses, it’s a bit peculiar that physical restaurants with hundreds of locations have been so slow to...

Did you know that CSS Custom Properties can handle images too?

So you might be aware of CSS Custom Properties that let you set a variable, such as a theme color, and then apply it to multiple classes like this: :root { --theme: #777; } .alert { background: var(—-theme); } .button { background: var(—-theme); } Well, I had seen this pattern so often that I thought Custom Properties could only be used for color values like rgba or hex – although that’s certainly not the case! After a little bit of experimentation and sleuthing around, I realized that it’s possible to use Custom Properties to set image paths, too. Here’s an example of that in action: :root { --errorIcon: url(error.svg) } .alert { background-image: var(--errorIcon); } .form-error { background-image: var(--errorIcon); } Kinda neat, huh? I think this could be used to make an icon system where you could define a whole list of images in the :root and call it whenever you needed to. Or you could make it easier to theme certain classes based on their state or perh...

Text Wrapping & Inline Pseudo Elements

I love posts like this. It's just about adding a little icon to the end of certain links, but it ends up touching on a million things along the way. I think this is an example of why some people find front-end fun and some people rather dislike it. Things involved: Cool [attribute] selectors that identify off-site links Deliberating on whether it's OK to use additional HTML within links or not Usage of white-space Combining margin-left and padding-right to place icons into placeholder space Using custom properties to keep things easier Usage of inline SVG versus background SVG Considering inline versus inline-block Using masks Direct Link to Article — Permalink The post Text Wrapping & Inline Pseudo Elements appeared first on CSS-Tricks . from News Aggregator - Top News Stories From Your Favourite News Source | News Vally https://newsvally.com/text-wrapping-inline-pseudo-elements

Control Icons with Font Size

Here’s a nifty trick from Andy Bell that now seems a little obvious in hindsight: if you set an SVG to have a width and height of 1em then you can change the size of it with the font-size property. Try and change the font-size on the body element below to see the icon scale with the text: See the Pen Font size controlled icon by Andy Bell ( @andybelldesign ) on CodePen . You pretty much always want your icons to be aligned with text so this trick helps by creating that inherent relationship in your code. Pretty nifty, eh? Coterie, a young New York startup, promises to deliver charming party kits to your doorstep

Party planning can be fun if you have the time for it and happen to know what you’re doing. For the rest of us, it can be a daunting, time-consuming endeavor, one that requires visits to numerous websites, in-store visits when those products invariably don’t arrive in time, then return visits to pick up those last items that you could have sworn you’d thrown in your shopping cart but did not. Enter Coterie , a nine-month-old, New York-based startup that was incubated with the help of the investment firm Female Founders Fund and that is assembling party kits that it’s delivering to customers’ doorsteps, for everything from birthday parties to baby showers to friendversary get-togethers. Just tell the site how many people you expect, whether it’s 10 or 50, then pick a kit. For example, the “lux” version of its “shine on” package — which could pretty much suit any occasion — comes with glittery plates, metallic flatware, votives, string lights, gold paper straws, dressed-up paper cups a...

Compass acquires Contactually, a CRM provider to the real estate industry

Compass , the real estate tech platform that is now worth $4.4 billion , has made an acquisition to give its agents a boost when it comes to looking for good leads on properties to sell. It is acquiring Contactually , an AI-based CRM platform designed specifically for the industry, which includes features like linking up a list of homes sold by a brokerage with records of sales in the area and other property indexes to determine which properties might be good targets to tap for future listings. Contactually had already been powering Compass’s own CRM service that it launched last year, so there is already a degree of integration between the two. Terms of the deal are not being disclosed. Crunchbase notes that Contactually had raised around $18 million from VCs that included Rally Ventures, Grotech and Point Nine Capital, and it was last valued at around $30 million in 2016, according to PitchBook . From what I understand, the startup had strong penetration in the market, so it’s li...

Static Site Generators: A Beginner’s Guide

A great option for you is to build your website using static site generators (SSG). There are tons of static site generators in a range of programming languages, such as JavaScript, Ruby, Go — the list goes on. In this article, I'm going to list five popular static site generators and their main features, so that you can form a better idea of which one among them would be a good fit for your project. I'm not claiming that I've provided the definitive list of SSGs or that I personally favor any of the software I include in my list over any other that's available out there. However, all of the products in the list are popular, performant, well-documented and well-supported. What Is a Static Site Generator? A common CMS (Content Management System), like WordPress for instance, builds the web pag...

Slack sparks further outrage with tweak to new logo

You've got to feel sorry for whoever mans Slack's Twitter account. Only recently they were at the coalface of dealing with angry tweets from designers outraged that the workplace chat app had changed its logo. And now they're having to go through it all over again thanks to a tweak to the design that aims to make the logo easier to spot. This latest update to the logo design is a change to the background colour of the mobile app icon, which has switched from a plummy purple to a crisp white. The audacity. Back in January, the new Slack logo, which was created by the app's in-house design team in collaboration with Michael Bierut and Pentagram , was met with widespread disapproval by the design community. Many were sad to see the old logo go, and criticised the new one for looking generic. Avid readers of Creative Bloq might remember that we came to the defence of the new logo . As the Slack team pointed out, the old design just wasn't fit for purpose anymore, an...
