Reliance Jio reportedly overtakes Airtel to become number two telecom company in India
Mukesh Ambani led Reliance Jio took the telecom sector by storm with its competitive pricing and the promise of offering 20 percent more data than its rivals. The company has reportedly now zoomed ahead of Airtel to become the second largest telecom player in the Indian market. After enquiring of Airtel’s customer base, TOI reports that it has 28.4 crore subscribers, while Jio’s current subscriber base is said to stand at 30.6 crores. This is in line with a recent PTI report of Jio crossing the 300 million customer mark in April, 2019. Vodafone-idea, however, is said to still retain the top spot with 38.7 crore consumers.
Additionally, citing an analyst that wishes to remain anonymous, the report states that at the pace Jio is adding users, it might overtake Vodafone-Idea’s subscriber count in the coming quarters. “Vodafone-Idea is the most vulnerable of the three private players in the market, and it may just be a matter of few more quarters, maybe three-four, before it is overtaken by Jio,” the analyst told TOI. The meteoric rise in Jio’s subscriber count is being attributed to the company’s aggressively priced recharge options. Additionally, other telecom operators have started weeding out low users that fetch low revenue, which also causes a loss in their overall subscriber count.
Jio is doing rather well, even though it operates only on the 4G network whereas its rivals have the advantage of being present on 2G, 3G and 4G networks. The Ambani led telco also offers additional features like free premium access to its suite of apps to Jio customers. Its apps include JioCinema, JioCinema, JioTV and the recently launched JioNews app. The new app amalgamates offerings of JioXpressNews, JioMags and JioNewsPaper apps to offer Live TV, and videos, digital magazines, and more.
